Does low-protein diet improve broiler performance under heat stress conditions? Rev. Bras. Ciênc. Avic.
Furlan,RL; Faria Filho,DE de; Rosa,PS; Macari,M.
Nutrition for broilers under high temperatures is extremely important for brazilian broiler chicken industry because the amounts of consumed nutrients and environmental temperature have great effects on bird performance and carcass quality. Among diet nutrients, protein has the highest heat increment; thus, during many years, diets with low protein level were recommended in order to reduce heat production in broiler chickens under heat stress. However, reports have shown that low-protein diets have negative effects on broiler performance when environmental temperature is high, because during heat stress, low food intake associated to a low diet protein induce amino acid deficiencies. Other studies have shown that broilers fed low-protein diets increase...

Effect of conductive cooling pads on heat and moisture production of gilts in hot and thermoneutral environments CIGR Journal
Riskowski, Gerald; Shaffer, Christopher S.; Harrison, Paul C..
Swine productivity, reproductivity, and well-being are reduced during periods of high temperature and the most commonly used cooling method, evaporative cooling, is not very effective under high humidity conditions. Conductive cooling pads made from pipes with cool water passing through them have the potential to cool swine under both high temperature and high humidity conditions. A study was conducted to determine some responses of gilts to conductive cooling pads under heat stress conditions. Conductive cooling pads 15 cm wide by 127 cm long were made from 13 mm diameter copper pipe and were fastened to the slatted flooring of a standard sow stall. The size and placement of the pads was such that the gilts could lie on them completely, lie on them...

Energy interconversion by the sarcoplasmic reticulum Ca2+-ATPase: ATP hydrolysis, Ca2+ transport, ATP synthesis and heat production Anais da ABC (AABC)
MEIS,LEOPOLDO DE.
The sarcoplasmic reticulum of skeletal muscle retains a membrane bound Ca2+-ATPase which is able to interconvert different forms of energy. A part of the chemical energy released during ATP hydrolysis is converted into heat and in the bibliography it is assumed that the amount of heat produced during the hydrolysis of an ATP molecule is always the same, as if the energy released during ATP cleavage were divided in two non-interchangeable parts: one would be converted into heat, and the other used for Ca2+ transport. Data obtained in our laboratory during the past three years indicate that the amount of heat released during the hydrolysis of ATP may vary between 7 and 32 Kcal/mol depending on whether or not a transmembrane Ca2+ gradient is formed across the...

Heat and moisture production in growing-finishing pigs and broilers CIGR Journal
Aarnink-FBC, Andre.
Heat and moisture production are important parameters for designing ventilation and climate control systems in livestock housing. In 2002 a report was published of the CIGR Section II Working Group on Climatization of Animal Houses ‘Heat and moisture production at animal and house levels’ with formula to calculate heat and moisture production for different livestock categories. The objective of this paper is to discuss these CIGR formula for growing-finishing pigs and broilers. Results from calculated heat and moisture production with the relatively simple formula in the CIGR report were compared with results from a more comprehensive model. From this comparison the following conclusions were drawn: 1) The relatively simple CIGR formula to calculate total...

Microcalorimetry of the smallest plankton fraction: in search for the sources of heat dissipation IBSS Repository
Mukhanov, V. S.; Kemp, R. B..
Heat production by the plankton pico (0.2 to 2 μm) and femto (<0.2 μm) fractions was measured in the dark using a microcalorimetric method. It was surprisingly found that the femtofraction (FF) produced more heat per seawater volume (48 ± 24 (95% CI) μW l-1) than the picofraction (25 ± 14 μW l-1). Consequently, we tested two hypotheses which could explain the phenomenon through a differentiation between the potential sources of heat in FF: (i) metabolism of ultramicrobacteria, the only living component in the fraction besides the non-metabolizing virioplankton which are unable to produce heat; (ii) extracellular chemical processes in aquatic environments. Results of microcalorimetry and respirometry combined with the use of antimicrobial agents...

Net energy evaluation of feeds and determination of net energy requirements for pigs R. Bras. Zootec.
Noblet,Jean.
Feeds for pigs can be attributed different energy values according to, first, the step considered in energy utilization (DE: digestible energy, ME: metabolizable energy and NE: net energy) and, second, the method used for estimation at each step. Reference methods for evaluating DE content are based on in vivo digestibility measurements; indirect estimates of DE values are obtained from in vitro methods or prediction equations based on chemical characteristics. Methods have also been proposed for estimating urinary energy (and gas energy to a smaller extent) in order to calculate ME content from DE value. The NE values originate from energy balance studies (slaughter methods or, more commonly, indirect calorimetry measurements in respiration chambers) and...

The influence of diurnal variation in animal activity and digestion on animal heat production CIGR Journal
Soren Pedersen; University of Aarhus.
Dimensioning of air conditioning plants for animal houses is traditionally based on steady-state conditions with constant animal heat and moisture production over a 24-hour cycle, despite the fact that the heat and moisture production varies diurnally. The heat production is normally highest in daytime and lowest during the night and therefore, there will be a discrepancy between the actual and the calculated indoor temperature and humidity, when using steady state models to control ventilation rate. This article deals with the two main factors influencing on the diurnal heat production, namely the animal activity and the digestion of food. In experiments carried out over three years in respiration chambers at Research Centre Foulum, Denmark, the...
